Teenagers are increasingly turning to AI companions for emotional support, with nearly three-quarters having interacted with chatbots and a third using them as confidants. These AI systems, designed to remember and empathize, blur the line between harmless escapism and emotional manipulation.

The GUARD Act, prompted by tragic incidents, seeks to ban AI companions for minors following reports of intense emotional bonds leading to severe consequences. High-profile lawsuits accuse AI firms of negligence after teens discussing suicide with chatbots later took their own lives.

OpenAI plans to implement age-gating and allow erotica for verified adults in December, adhering to its principle of treating adult users as adults.
